Why: The American Psychological Association reports that 12.7% is the percentage of the U.S. population over age 12 who took antidepressant medication in the past month, according to an analysis from the National Center for Health Statistics. 64% is the increase in the percentage of people using antidepressants between 1999 and 2014. In 1999, only 7.7 percent of the population took the medication. 19.1% is the percentage of older adults (over age 60) who took antidepressants in the past month.
